Weekly Rewind: 1/24/11 "Performances by Lyriq Tye & Golden Chyld"

This week at Mellomonday’s was astray from the ordinary. Rather than having a single musical guest, they featured three. They also managed to squeeze a poetry slam in between musical guests and the house poets.

As always the night kicked off with a smooth R&B blend laid down by DJ MIDWID, however instead of starting the live set with a poet, they began with a gut busting comedic performance by Ryan Barret. Asia’s hosting was funny, relevant and on point as usual. With lines like “It’s cool to be short, except that we’re always the last ones to know it’s raining” had the crowd in hysterics.
The first musical guest was Freeport, Bahamas’ own “Golden Chyld” In addition to boastful bars like “You gonna need to hibernate after having sex with me,” GC’s stage presence won the mob of females over with his sonically sensual single “Pusher”  (see video below for GC's performance)
This week’s poetry slam was intense and entertaining as the poets were competing for a spot to represent Hollywood in the regional Southern Fried Slam in June and the National Poetry Slam Competition in August. The places were as follows: Ali, Made Son, and Trell made first team in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and Mori came in as an alternate. In between rounds on the slam, house poet, artist and MC, Lox performed.

All the while, as everyone listened to poetry and music, on a side stage urban artist Tiffanie (twitter: @theeohmydotkom) worked on a painting of Bob Marley.

After the announcement of the winners of the slam, Carol City’s own “Lyriq Tye” gave a crowd pleasing performance of her single “What Real Women Do” The night ended with DJ MIDWID hosting the after party well into 2am.
